After a one-year break, I once again find myself sitting down to write a goals list. The year is now 2022. Are the years moving faster, or does it just feel that way to me? It’s a cliché, but life really is short. For the last five years, since January 1, 2017, I’ve been preparing annual goals lists. I’m really happy to have kept this tradition going. This content feels like a nice way to measure my personal performance each year. Of course, since the list isn’t always in front of me, most of the time I even forget about it. That’s why this year I’ve decided to keep the list more visible.
Since the one thing that’s always with me is my phone, I’ll set reminders on random days of the year related to these goals—especially on dates when they’d make the most sense. Secondly, I’ll prepare large visual reminders and place them at the top of my computer screen. Since I spend most of my time in front of that screen, it makes sense. But at the same time, I need to increase the chance that I’ll actually look at those visuals. Over time my brain starts treating them as part of the room, and my eyes don’t even register them anymore. So I’ll need to think about some sort of attention-grabbing trigger.
In last year’s “My Goals for 2021” post, I wrote the sentence: “I could practically draw a data chart out of these writings.” But I could have added more data entries to make that possible, and built a system where each year’s goals post also included new metrics. I didn’t do that. I realized it this year. For that reason, after finishing the “goals” section this year, I’ll also add a section with questions designed to collect data that can be tracked year by year.
Before reading this year’s goals, if you check out my previous years’ posts, you’ll have a better sense of context:
