Build a Website #18 — StatPress for Visitor Stats (and Better Alternatives)

2026 note: This post is from 2014. The StatPress plugin has since been removed from the WordPress repository or is no longer maintained. Modern alternatives are listed at the bottom of the post.

In 2014 StatPress was one of WordPress’s most-loved visitor-stats plugins. Daily/monthly/total visitor counts, pages-per-session, Google bot hits, the search query that landed people on your site, referrer, browser/OS/IP — a quick at-a-glance panel.

2026 Replacement — Use Real Analytics

Storing analytics in the WordPress database hurts performance and bloats tables on a busy site. Today we keep analytics in a dedicated tool:

  • Jetpack Stats: light, free, runs on WordPress.com infra.
  • Plausible or Fathom: privacy-friendly, cookieless, GDPR-clean.
  • Matomo: open-source self-hosted alternative.
  • Google Analytics 4: free and most powerful — plug it in via the Site Kit by Google plugin.
  • Cloudflare Web Analytics: free, no cookies.
