I was actually planning to write this before attending the Google Developer Groups seminar in Kütahya, but it turned out I’d write it after. GDG — Google Developer Groups — is a community made up of volunteers who promote Google products. The seminar in Kütahya covered many topics under that umbrella. As far as I know, GDG operates in 6 different cities: Istanbul, Eskişehir, Kütahya, Ankara, Düzce and Konya.
I attended the event in Kütahya on November 20. It lasted around 3–4 hours. There was a much bigger student turnout than I expected. For the first time at DPU, I saw this many people line up for an event. Capacity was around 140%.
Speakers: Mehmet Aca from Turkcell’s Geleceği Yazanlar, Melis Dinçol — Microsoft Student Partner and from GDG Eskişehir, Furkan İkiz from GDG Eskişehir, and Said Tahsin Dane from GDG Istanbul. Eray Aktokluk — an 11-year-old inventor friend of ours — was also there.
At the event, Mehmet Aca talked about technology and the Geleceği Yazanlar project. Melis Dinçol talked about the Microsoft Student Partner program and the events she attended on her trips to San Francisco — Makers and similar. Furkan İkiz talked about wearable tech and circuits/boards like Raspberry Pi and Intel Galileo. Said Tahsin Dane talked about his experience with Google Glass and how it works. Thanks to him, we got to try Google Glass.
During the seminar break, a few of us walked over and asked if we could try the Google Glass. He didn’t say no. We did the “Okay Glass” routine. Got into search. I tried searching “Burak Bayram” on Google — it heard “rock bottom.” I lost it laughing. From here, my thanks to Tahsin Dane for traveling all the way to Dumlupınar University.
When I first put the glasses on, I felt the need to close my other eye. Both eyes were trying to focus on the upper right corner. Aside from that, the image looks distant. Like there’s a corridor and the image is at the end of it — it doesn’t shove itself into your eyes. And it wasn’t in Turkish; like I said, it didn’t fully understand me. We agreed on “Okay Glass” and the basics like “Search.” I’d actually first heard about Google Developer through Tekno Seyir.
So that’s roughly how the seminar went. Next up: Istanbul. On December 6th, God willing, I’ll be home in Istanbul and try to attend that event. On December 20th — Eskişehir, if I can make it.
