This post walks through formatting a PC and installing Windows 8.1 from scratch. The same flow applies — with only UI differences — to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
2026 note: Originally published in 2014. Windows 8.1 support ended in 2023. If you’re formatting in 2026, pick Windows 11 — the steps are nearly identical. This guide stays useful for older hardware running 8.1.
Preparation
- USB stick: 8 GB or larger.
- Windows ISO: Microsoft’s official site (use the Media Creation Tool).
- Back up your data — format wipes everything.
- Have your product key ready.
Step by Step
- Make a bootable USB: use Rufus or Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool (UEFI/GPT recommended).
- Boot from USB: enter BIOS/UEFI with F2/Del/F12, move USB to first boot priority.
- When Windows Setup opens, pick Custom Installation.
- Delete existing partitions (especially C: and System Reserved), then click New on the unallocated space.
- Install takes 15-30 min; the PC will reboot several times.
- Set up account, keyboard, network.
- Once installed, run Windows Update and check drivers.
After Formatting
- Install GPU, audio and network drivers from the manufacturer’s site.
- Microsoft Defender is enough for most users in 2026.
- Restore your backed-up data.
- Install your daily apps (browser, office suite, IDE).
